The doldrums of winter are well and truly upon us. This slice of the year is always fraught with frigid conditions and icy perils, spurring even the calmest citizens to throw their shovels in exasperation and direct obscenities at the weather Gods.

Luckily, there are some welcome distractions available to keep your yelling at the sky to a minimum. Read on for a trio of things to try when Friday hits!

Skating and Shinny

Barrie’s outdoor skating rinks are ready for gliding. Both city hall and the rink at Centennial are open, weather permitting, from 10am-10pm daily. Keep in mind that Centennial is designated for shinny only, and that capacity limits are in place for both.

If you’re up for a road trip, there are plenty of cool trails within driving distance of Barrie. Arrowhead, Discovery Harbour and the Simcoe Museum are just a few that are waiting for blades.

Hit the Library

Both branches are open, with limited capacity and a 60-minute stay. There’s also express pick-up and a lot of online programming.

This Sunday the brave who would risk sewing can learn how to compose boots for their furry companions. (Have band-aids on stand by)

Order In And Stream

Nobody wants to be home when they could be at the pub or restaurant, but we are back there for now. Order a meal on Saturday night from your fav local eatery to support them! Booze can be added to the orders, and if you need vino, there are delivery options for that too!

There is gobs of entertainment to soak up on the major streaming platforms this weekend, but consider adding one or two locally-based podcasts to your binge mix. There’s also a plethora of chic content on the YT channels of the Barrie Film Festival, Talk Is Free Theatre and Talk is Free Theatre.

And of course, loads of bands from the 705 scene on Spotify to tune in while you are meal prepping.
