14 Things To Do in Barrie This February

Truly Canadian Barrie Events: Moonlight Snowshoes and Fondue

Well here we are, sitting at home wondering what’s happening this weekend that can help shake off our ‘still a week until a Statutory holiday’ blues. Are you randomly googling the same three words, ‘Mid Winter Blahs’?  We get it and we want to turn your McFrown upside down.

Let’s play a game, let’s take three random words and google them and see what pops up.  No, not ‘happening this weekend’ but how about these, ‘Moonlight’ and ‘snowshoe’ and ‘Fondue’?  This is going to be hilarious!

Okay, so maybe not as hilarious as we thought.  We’ve got a hit.  Apparently, Moonlight Snowshoe and Fondue is a thing.  What an amazing way to celebrate winter and get away from the mid winter blahs. This event is hosted by Hardwood Ski and Bike, located in the ‘gateway to cottage country’ it’s between Highway 400 and Highway 11 – just 15 min from Barrie. You can peek through their webcam and double check the trail conditions before you head out.

Happening this Weekend: Hot Cheese for a Good Cause

Snow showing is a great form of exercising and a true winter workout. Imagine burning almost 1000 calories per hour, and having fun doing it!  If this Saturday is leg day, then you’ll want to be a part of the Moonlight Snowshoe. Oh yes, and we can’ forget the fondue. Well let’s look at it this way, you burn a bunch of calories doing your beautiful and picturesque Moonlight Snowshoe, then you can enjoy fondue under the stars.  You’ll get to enjoy the locally sourced cheese fondue with fresh local baked bread provided by Fox’s Bakery, local apple cider and a beverage from Heritage Estates Winery.  There will be some live music, and a bonfire too.  This amazing 5km guided hike will be truly memorable and an experience that you certainly don’t want to miss out on.

There are a few Barrie Uncovered Secrets to share:

  • Fondue is after the hike (have a snack before you come)
  • Maple Syrup Taffy by the fire. ‘Nuff said.
  • Fireworks.  (yes, you read that correctly)

This magical event is yours for the taking and it’s all for an amazing cause – AvYouth, a wonderful charity whose mission statement is: Providing Youth an Alternative to Violence through Education. There are also themes when Hardwood Ski and Bike throw their Moonlight Snowshoe and Fondue, and this weekend’s theme is:  Celebrate Love.  If this makes you think perfect Valentines Adventure – then we’d have to agree with you….but to be fair, a Brewery Tour Date is also pretty exciting as well.
