It’s not often this blog space will be used to shower praise upon members of the royal family.

And yet, we must extend thanks to King Edward VII for declaring the Monday closest to May 24th to be a stat holiday way back in 1904. Thus giving us a glorious extra day off work and school every year.

And the city by the lake and surrounding areas are awash in activities to celebrate.


Although just about everything is closed on Monday, the days leading up to it have got loads for you and the family to do. Particularly if you are avoiding cleaning out the garage like you planned on Easter.

May Days continue in downtown Barrie. Shoppers can make a purchase and enter a ballot to win a prize package valued at $2500 while supporting a local cause.

The Uptown Theatre is open and showing matinees through Saturday and Sunday.

The Baycats are at home to the Kitchener Panthers.

And if you are a boardster, Sir Games Alot is hosting an all day boardgame bonanza on Monday.


There are few words that go together better than craft and beer. And If you are willing to drive an hour or so out of town, you can take in all the glory of the combo at Muskoka’s Craft beer fest.

Happening in Huntsville on Saturday, it’s a full day of adult beverage consumption. The festival features dozens of brewers, including Barrie’s own Redline Brewhouse.

Tickets are $20. And don’t be an idiot; be sure to stay overnight or have a DD.

The Foxx Lounge welcomes a host of punk, metal and hard rock acts when the doors open on Friday. The headliner this week is Hightower, a punk rock quintet all the way from Paris! (Does that mean the show will have translator on hand?)

Local acts 30 Going on 13 make their Barrie stage debut on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Five Points Theatre hosts a 90s hip hop tribute featuring Ernie Paniccioli, a renowned photographer who has captured images of some of the industry’s biggest stars.



Although the city isn’t offering any fireworks, Blue Mountain is. The entire weekend is jammed with family oriented fun, including movies, live music and scavenger hunts. The fireworks go at 10pm on Friday.
