PODCAST IT UP

If hanging by the fire is on your list for this Sunday, might we recommend curling up with a good podcast? Of course we’ve got a variety of audio entertainment, but there are a plethora of equally cool local pods.

True crime junkies should have a listen to Whereabouts Unknown, hosted by local private investigator Ellen White. The ongoing series shines a spotlight on the stories of the missing and murdered in Canada, particularly cases from around the region.

Sequel Talk with local filmmaker Mitch Graszat is a pop culture-savvy chat where guests dream up imaginary sequels and talk about em! Recent episodes include bad ideas for classic movies like Heathers and the Princess Bride. And it’s not limited to just movies. Mitch and company also speculate on what could have been with classic songs and TV shows.

VIRTUAL CINEMA WITH THE BFF

Since the start of Covid, film distributors have been teaming up with independent exhibitors across North America to bring the theatrical experience to your home. The BFF has a big range of streamed films to rent on their website. By clicking on a movie, you’re supporting both the distributors and the Barrie Film Festival’s efforts to bring first-run theatrical selections to town.

BUY LOCAL!

Ferndale Banquet Hall is hosting a holiday pop up market, packed with local artisans and small businesses. It runs Saturday from 10am-4pm.

Also on Saturday, Sonder Studio hosts a New To You Vintage Market featuring everything vintage, antique, retro + thrift. Housewares, clothing + nostalgia.

The Weekender: 3 Things To Do

Take a Holiday Road Trip

There are quite a few holiday inspired drive through and walk through happenings around the region, including a few starting this weekend.

Blue Mountain kicked off Enchanted Forest this week; the entire Village will be decked out in garlands and bows. Ideal for a family trip full of festive sights and sounds.

Aside from the festive décor, there will be fire pits to warm by, holiday music and carolers and horse drawn carriage with Santa every Saturday. At night, you can take the one kilometer pedestrian pathways through the Village and around the Mill Pond to discover interactive Christmas light displays.

There’s also the Bluffs Winter Wonderland in Scarborough, and Holiday Light show in Vaughan. Hit up our Winter Wonderland Road Trip blog for more on each!

Free Santa Photos | The 400 Market

Santa will be back at The 400 Market starting this Saturday, and every Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm until Sunday, December 20th, 2020! 🎅

Santa will be a bit different this year to ensure COVID-19 safety measures for Santa and visitors. Instead of the regular Santa costume (open-faced), the Market will have a professionally designed, fully-masked costumed Santa.

The Santa photos are “Free” so please bring your own cameras and or phone cell phones. There are no costs and/or donations required.

And while you’re there, why not get a start on your holiday shopping?

Live Music

As always, there is plenty of tunes to be heard, if you know where to go. Musicians and restaurants have been among the hardest hit vocations in this pandemic, so if you can get out to support both while being safe, you should!

Playing this week; John Anderson at Flying Monkey’s, Big Furry Tractor at the Queen’s and Bill Nadeu at Malone’s Pint House. You can also hit up North Country BBQ for live music Thursday – Saturday from Owen Riegling, The Beresford’s and Rob Watts.

Keep in mind that we always want to hear from you about how we are doing! Reach out anytime to [email protected] with your feedback or story submissions.
