TGIF: The Golden Pint on Dunlop Street

TGIF: Mango In Flight

McReily’s Lager Is a Smooth, Homepub Beverage Experience

Let’s be honest…there are worse ways to kickstart the weekend than with a cold beverage.

And yet, it’s easy to fall into a routine of buying the same couple of beers or spirits at your favorite watering hole or the LCBO. Of course, there’s always going to be your standard go-to’s. But mixing it up (get it…mixing???) makes for a fun outing.

With that in mind, we’re taking a shot (bet you thought we would stop with the drinking puns after that first one) at finding you a weekly selection of spirits to liven up your Friday.

This week why don’t you try…

MCREILY’S LAGER

TGIF

Although several of Barrie’s pubs offer locally brewed beers, McReily’s on Dunlop street is one of a few non-brewery locations that create their own lager.

In aroma, it’s of course slightly hoppy, with a just a hint of citrus.

In taste this is a drink that is balanced but not too sweet. The bitterness is soft and doesn’t overpower the overall experience.

Vibrant levels of carbonation might be a bit much for some, but for our money the fizz is hitting just the right tastebuds.

And the presentation heightens the pub experience in terms of authenticity; a warm golden tint with a slim head of foam. Best paired with a salty side of the menu item (of which McReily’s has several) it’s a pint that you can stick with all night.

And to add the experience, McReilly’s has loads of live music on weekends! You can always hit up our live music guide to see who is guarding the mic on any given night.

TGIF: CALIFORNIA (IN A CAN) COMES TO BARRIE

BARNSTOMER IPA DELIVERS A COASTAL TASTE

FLIGHT DELAY WEST COAST

Admit it! At least once or twice in your life, you’ve at least entertained the notion of moving to California (probably after scraping ice off your car for the 748th time in mid-January).

While that particular goal might be somewhat outlandish, you can bring the palm tree state a little closer with the proper beverage.

Barnstormer has just the ticket with this Hops infused IPA. Flight Delay pours a light golden brown with plenty of foamy head that recedes nicely, and it’s first impression only gets better when the hopsy/citrusy aromas hit.

It presents a vibrant bitter taste, but it doesn’t over-power or dominate too much of the pallet. We would give it a medium in terms of body, with about the same in carbonation levels, leaving you with a moderately crisp bite.

And at 6.5 Abv, it’s a good one to stick with for most of your sitting.

TGIF: Destiny (In A Glass) Is Calling

12 MINUTES TO DESTINY – FLYING MONKEYS

You could do worse than 12 Minutes to Destiny, an imaginative pale with as much character as it’s creative cover.

The initial pour retains a finger and a half of frothy lace, giving way to a pale red body and ample carbonation. The first sensations on the nose are aromas of raspberry and florals, backed by malts.

The first taste reinforces the fruit infusion, with balanced traces of oat through the entire sitting. The aftermath leaves a tinge of flower and dryness, encompassing the drink’s light refreshment.

Overall, this is an enjoyable fruit lager, with complexity but not overpowering sweetness. An ideal summer find.

It pairs well with seafood, especially sushi and East Asian cuisines;  or with fruit deserts such as strawberry shortcake. And 4.10% ABV, you can stick with it for the majority of your sitting.

TGIF: A Lager So Good The Germans Would Be Envious

IDLE COAST – REDLINE BREWERY

Germans do alot of things very well; Cars. Soccer. Chocolate.

And of course…BEER.

Most beer producers would die happy if their craft creations stacked up well compared to the essential Bavarian ales that have been the stuff of Oktoberfest for centuries.

And this pale from Redline does an admirable job of paying tribute, while not totally mimicking those great German lagers.

It’s vibrant gold colour and foamy head make for an effervescent first impression, while the bready undertones and aromas reflect classic Munich Malts. As you approach the bottom of the glass, it leaves a crisp and dry after taste, providing an ideal compliment to anything meaty or sandwich based  on the menu.

And it’s a very moderate 4.6 ABV, so you can crush more than one without worry of your socks being blown off in one seating.

SAWDUST CITY – GOLDEN BEACH PALE ALE

TGIF Adult Beverage Barrie

Can you bottle a season? Probably not (despite what Star Trek episodes might tell us)

And yet…when you think warm weather patios, cold drinks and good beer, this IPA comes pretty damned close.

An inviting pour of nice golden lager with a three finger head, it’s a refreshing thirst quencher that boasts hints of citrus and wheat. The lightness of the colour is backed up by a gentle lemony aroma. And like other strong lagers, the foamy head dissipates slowly while not detracting from the overall taste.

Ideal for patio sessions, but the best use of this hoppy ale might be on the dock during cottage season. It’s dryish body makes the can experience vibrant, meaning it will do well in the cooler for an afternoon.

If you are looking for a meal to join in, it’s probably best paired with lighter fare. Think salads, chicken dishes or sandwiches.

You can pick up Sawdust City’s Golden Beach Pale Ale at the LCBO and local pubs. Read more about it right here.
