Alliance Billiards – The Best of Both Worlds!

Do you enjoy playing billiards?

The History...

The game certainly has a long and rich history!

Beginning around the 15th Century, it’s believed to have evolved from lawn croquet played outdoors.

The play moved to an indoor table covered with a green cloth to simulate grass for better year round play.

In 1600 Shakespeare even mentioned it in his play, Anthony and Cleopatra.

The first rules were written in 1675 and have been revised as the game modernized.

Snooker is an off-take of the original British game of English Billiards.  Those in the know tell us that the British appetite for snooker is akin to the North American love of baseball!

There have been times throughout history that billiard tournaments received even wider coverage that some wars!

The Comeback!

The game died off somewhat in the 50’s until Paul Newman starred in “The Hustler”, bringing it back full force.

At Alliance Billiards, owner Georgia Makrygiannis let us know that both the CPA and House Leagues are up and running!

Get Behind the Eight-Ball with Alliance Billiards – Open!

And we’re off!  Alliance Billiards owner, Georgia Makrygiannis, was right behind the eight-ball to welcome you back!  However with our area being in the grey zone again…

Once patrons are able to come back in for pool…..  Alliance Billiards wants to let us know that if your team or group of friends wants to beef up their skills – they’ll take reservations for groups of 10.

It couldn’t get much better than that!

For those of us not that into the game – we’re still able to get the same great food and alcohol for eat in or pick-up and delivery.

Georgia was so thrilled at being able to welcome everyone back. She still wants you to know just how important you are! 

Alliance is cleaning everything (Tables/balls/cues/etc.) with Microban, and will continue to do so once they’re able to re-open the tables.  Your safety is their first concern!

Alliance is still running their daily specials, has family sized trays and does catering as well!

Sharing Comfort Food With Alliance Billiards

SHARING COMFORT FOOD WITH ALLIANCE BILLIARDS

Georgia Makrygiannis of Alliance Billiards took time out to share a recipe with us.  Knowing that this time of year is all about comfort food, Georgia has given us Shepherd’s Pie.  Not only is this comfort food, but it’s inexpensive and great for using up leftovers.

Georgia has been feeding people for many years, leaving very happy tummies along the way.  So if she says it’s good – then it’s good!

Being of Greek heritage, Georgia tells us that “Comfort food should be a way of life, a taste of home and fill your soul with memories.”

In Greek culture that might be Moussaka (Eggplant with ground beef casserole), Pastitsio (Greek lasagna) or Fasolada (Bean soup).

As Canadians our choices of comfort food vary as much as our heritage does.  What do you think of as comfort food?  I think of hearty soups, a filling stew or lasagna – all served with fresh, hot crusty bread!

The best part of Georgia’s kitchen at Alliance Billiards is that alongside the usual “Pub Grub”, she offers family sized trays of incredibly good comfort food!

On that menu we find trays of Cabbage Rolls, Stuffed Peppers, Greek Meatballs, Lemon Chicken with potatoes and more.

It’s the perfect time right now to order a tray or two!  Call and order one for dinner and one for the freezer. What could be easier? I’ll tell you what could be easier – the prices at Alliance Billiards are extremely good – and…they offer free delivery!

 

GEORGIA’S SHEPHERD’S PIE

Mashed Potato Topping

 

2 lbs. potatoes cubed

4 tbsp. butter

¼ cup sour cream

¼ to ½ c. milk

Salt and pepper

  1. Peel and dice the potatoes. Cook until for tender, about 10-15 minutes.
  2. Drain well then return to the hot pot to rest one minute allowing any remaining liquid to evaporate.
  3. Add butter, sour cream, milk, salt and pepper. Mash the potatoes and then stir until all ingredients are well combined.

Meat Filling

1 lb. lean ground beef

1 small onion diced

2 cloves garlic minced

2 cups frozen peas, carrots and corn medley

2 tbsp. flour

½ cup beef broth

1 tbsp. tomato paste

1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce

1 tsp. rosemary

½ tsp. thyme

1 bay leaf

  1. Sauté chopped onion in large frying pan with oil for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  2. Add ground beef and break it apart with a wooden spoon.
  3. Add herbs and seasonings. Stir well.  Cook 6-8 minutes until meat is browned stirring occasionally.
  4. Add Worcestershire sauce and minced garlic. Stir to combine.  Cook one minute.
  5. Add the flour and tomato paste, stir until well incorporated. Add broth and stir gently to combine.
  6. Add frozen vegetables. Bring to a boil then reduce to simmer.  Simmer 5 minutes stirring occasionally.
  7. Remove Bay leaf.
  8. Set mixture aside.

 

Assemble the Casserole

 

  1. Pour the meat mixture into a 9” x 9” baking dish. Spread it out evenly.  Spoon the mashed potato mixture on top of the meat filling.  Carefully spread evenly.
  2. If the baking dish looks very full, place it on a rimmed baking sheet to prevent oven clean up. Bake uncovered 25 – 30 minutes.  Let rest for 10 minutes before serving

We’ve uncovered a hidden gem at the north end of Barrie!  Alliance Billiards!! 

After speaking with owner, Georgia Makrygiannis, we realized that this is not your usual pool hall.  The billiards room has been around for 27 years, but Georgia took it over only 5 years ago.  During the past 5 years, Georgia’s passion for people can be seen, heard, felt and tasted!!

In fact, one staff says… “Georgia – You blew life into this place” –Brian Kelly, Bartender.

The staff have worked hard at making Alliance Billiards a place for not only Pool Leagues, Dart Leagues and Tournaments, but Family fun as well.  Georgia tells us,  “when children play billiards they’re playing against the ball, not each other so it teaches good sportsmanship.  Billiards also helps with concentration, eye hand co-ordination and geometry.  Besides all that – it’s just good, affordable fun!”

Opening at 9 am, she is there ready to make a breakfast for anyone coming off shift that might enjoy a game or two before hitting the hay.  Prior to COVID a standard week included the various leagues, including a youth league, ages 7-17, Karaoke, Live Music by great local artists, D.J. night and date night.

Catering Available

Alliance Billiards has a full service menu – not just bar food.  Actually we can even order trays ready to eat or to divvy up into the freezer.  Imagine – “Made by Georgia” treats like Spanakapita, Cabbage Rolls, Stuffed Peppers, Lemon Chicken or Greek Meatballs to name a few.  We can order single servings or family sizes at REALLY affordable prices.  They’ll even deliver for us!! (Just give them 24 hours notice)

COVID is not getting Georgia down!  During the summer she was allowed a temporary patio that became such a favorite spot for her patrons she’s working at keeping it.  It has also given Georgia initiative to reinvent some of her services, like the tray service and no charge delivery!

Reservations Available

Alliance Billiards will accept reservations from nine a.m. until noon for the midnight shift workers and early birds, but after that call and see if there’s space!

You can order from the kitchen any time for take-out or delivery knowing that pure passion for food has gone into your meals.

A Shout Out

Georgia would like to give a shout out to the Patrons of Alliance Billiards.  They call or text often with food orders, morning reservations or just to check in!  For many avid players, Alliance is like going to a second home.  They know they can “Play Safe and Stay Safe”, because Georgia and her staff are “there to care”.

Over the holiday make a morning date and play a game!  Call Alliance to reserve your table.  Better yet, when you’re reserving your table – order a tray of homemade deliciousness for dinner and make a day of it!
