OUTDOOR SCREENING OF GHOSTBUSTERS

Mother Nature apparently didn’t like the idea of showing Ghostbusters last week when it was originally scheduled (Supernatural reasons we mere mortals aren’t privy to obviously) but it’s a go for this Saturday at Centennial. All you need is a lawn chair and some twinkies, with the film starting at dusk.

LOCAL FOODIE DAY @ FARMER’S MARKET

Show your love for Simcoe County’s farmers and food producers on Local Food Day at the Barrie Farmers’ Market.

Shop with as many vendors as possible to earn ballots for the Market Money draw. Top prize is $200 to spend at the market and second and third get $50 each!

Urban Pantry Barrie will be on hand to do some cooking demos and you can find out about community gardens throughout the city.

ARE YOU MISSING A GLASS SLIPPER?

And on Saturday, The Five Points Theatre is hosting the Movie Premiere of, “Modern Cinderella” a Musical featuring Infinity Performing Arts students between the ages of 10 – 14 yrs old. It’s a RED CARPET Event with tickets online or at the box office.

SOCIAL RECAP: THE WEEK THAT WAS IN BARRIE MAY 13TH – 20TH

The Week That Was

All The Good (And Occasional) Bad of What Went Down in Barrie Last Week

There are three certainties in life…

Death.

Taxes.

Social media.

And if you are tweeting, posting and talking about Barrie on social media, we want to hear from you! Every week we will do a quick recap of the week that was in Barrie based on your pics, posts and videos.

Whether it’s concerts, store openings, foodie reviews, feelgood stories, fun facts about Barrie, even bizarre bird formations over the marina, we want to share it.

The Week that was in Barrie…

There is never a shortage of gigs and live performances in town, but this week featured a real treat at the Five Points theatre. Legendary Hip Hop photographer and journalist Ernie Paniccioli took the stage with a selection of stories and images spanning decades, and @greenbyhand was there.

And just down the street the Foxx Lounge welcomed another well known artist along with a first timer on the stage, as captured by @53rdand3rdShow.

Some will say that a city doesn’t really come alive until patio season arrives. And by “some” we mean, ya know… us. So it was invigorating to see the tables and chairs finally come out downtown and in the south end restaurants. And one of the city’s best rooftop hangouts is open again!

In addition to the patios returning, we had the long weekend arriving to celebrate. And @smartmovesplayplace was getting into the mood…

Who else is this happy that it’s a long weekend? 😃

And when it comes to long weekends, Barnstormers reminded us that a canned adult beverage is an ideal companion for the extra day off of work/school.

Barrie has to be among the most photogenic cities in the province (if not the country) as @sharpesteye showed with this stunner from the lakeshore.

And how about this for star power! On Saturday one of the great play by play callers of the last 30 years Dan Shulman joined his son Ben to call the balls and strikes for the Baycats game! (Better still, the ‘Cats won 11-8)

In addition to a packed weekend of punk, alternative and metal shows at the Foxx Lounge, Sunday marks the annual Youth Battle of The Bands. It’s a great excuse to come out and support some local up and comers, with cash and recording opportunities on offer for prizes. Doors are at 4pm.

If you are feeling something a bit more cinematic, Cirque Musicale is in town on Friday and Saturday. Bravado Show Choir puts on the performance at Georgian Thearte. Think Cirque De Solei meets Riverdance.

FREE COMIC BOOK DAY

If you are geek inclined. May 4th/Star Wars Day, is tantamount to a religious holiday.

The fact that it falls on Free Comic Book Day this year is the equivalent of Santa and the Easter Bunny teaming up to create some kind of new Mega Holiday.

As always, Barrie’s comic haven Big B Comics will be hosting the day. Anyone heading to the festivities can score 4 free comics, with additional books for anyone bringing a food donation or in cosplay.

In addition, there will be tons of colouring, crafting and prize draws. The nerdastic day kicks off at 10am.

ARENA CROSS @ BARRIE MOLSON CENTRE

The 2019 Rockstar Energy Arenacross series returns to Barrie for Round 4 of the circuit on Saturday. Arenacross is the first stop in the three discipline Rockstar Energy Triple Crown, and it’s a fantastic event featuring motorcross racing and local riders.

Gates open to the Rockstar Pit party @ 5:30pm
Show will start @ 7pm

So, the Leafs lost. In Game 7. In Boston. AGAIN.

But this year you don’t have to crawl into bed for a month with kleenex and a bottle of Tequilia (that’s how everyone copes with disappointment…right?)

There are plenty of things to in the city by the lake to take your mind off the crippling, omnipresent existential agony of cheering for Toronto sports teams. Damn it…where’s that bottle?

Keep in mind that you can find all the events listed, as well as events coming in the days ahead on our events page.

Assuming everyone recovers from the double entendre of a long weekend and 4/20, it will be another packed ticket on the Barrie concert scene.

The Foxx brings the noise on Friday with a slate of metal and heavy alternative acts from around the province. On Saturday things slow down just a wee bit with one of Barrie’s favourite funk bands, The Noolands, headlining. Doors are at 9pm for both.

Elsewhere, Donaleigh’s has Get The Funk Out and Memphis Mudd. Flying Monkeys brings in Emberly A Duo and Dav Dickenson. And Dwayne Gretzky is at Mavrick’s.

SUNSET SPEEDWAY OPENING DAY

You know what’s great about racing? It’s a sport that doesn’t have a goaltender who lets in bad goals at the worst possible time. Ok, seriously WHERE IS THAT BOTTLE?

Anyway, this Saturday is the kickoff of Nascar season at Sunset Speedway. The Speedway has been producing some of the best racing talent in the country since they opened back in 1968. They hold races every Saturday through to September (weather permitting) and even offer drivers of any experience level to take a spin in the cars! Read up on it right here

TOONIE SALE

Dress For Success is back at the Bayfield Mall. It’s a great opportunity to score gently worn clothes for mega cheap, as low as $2.

The dresses are suitable for weddings, prom, summer parties. Shoes too! It all begins on Friday.
