Mother’s Day is upon us.

And while you may be among the thousands ( ah, let’s be honest…among the millions) of guys scrambling all over town to find the perfect gift for that perfect woman, let us save you the trouble.

It’s wine. Get her wine. We asked…she wants wine.

And if that isn’t enough, there are plenty of brunches and outings to spoil her rotten. Read on to find out where and when!

Keep in mind that you can find all the events listed, as well as events coming in the days ahead on our events page.

MOTHER’S DAY FUN

As mentioned, Barrie has a plethora of intriguing outings to celebrate Mom this weekend.

High Tea? Check

Brunches? Check

Extravagant Event? Check

And if you want to tie in some shopping, there’s also a lunch and bazzar sale happening at the Barrie Manor on Saturday.

But again…just be sure to include the wine.

BAYCATS SEASON OPENER

The boys of summer are back! And the best part is they don’t play on ice…so unlike the Colts and the Leafs, they won’t break your heart at it’s most vulnerable point! Uhh…sorry. Still processing all those hockey losses.

Barrie’s minor baseball team throws out the first pitch on Sunday, taking on the London Majors at 2pm. The ‘cats are coming off their fifth straight IBL championship season, and tickets are just $5.

CONCERTS

Fun Fact! We post a full calendar of concerts every week in Barrie. And we are ALWAYS on the lookout for local artist performances. If you are playing anywhere in town, fire the deets to [email protected] We’ll be sure to post your gig!

Although it’s always busy on the live music circuit in Barrie, this weekend is particularly packed.

The Foxx Lounge welcomes a host of punk, metal and hard rock acts when the doors open on Friday. The big one this week is a group out of the UK called The Human Project, making their Barrie debut on Saturday. Fans of Brit based punk and bands like Bad Religion should get a charge out of these guys.

Elsewhere, Georgian Theatre hosts a 70s pop song love-in with Abbamania on Friday night. Mavrick’s has country star Granger Smith.

And The Kempenfelt Community Players take over Ferndale Banquet Hall for their production of The Wedding Singer.

MAKER’S EXPO @ BARRIE PUBLIC LIBRARY

Saturday marks a first for the library. The 1st annual Maker Expo happens at 10am, and if you have a few creatives in the family this is right up their alley.

The event includes maker demos, speakers, a robot marketplace and green screen studio time. Local vendors will be on hand as well!

BONUS UNCOVERED EVENT! BEACH VOLLEYBALL

Although Spring isn’t exactly blowing the doors off so far, warmer weather is bound to arrive soon…right?

And with it comes Beach Volleyball season. There are leagues in Barrie, although signup was in the winter. But Horseshoe Resort has drop in days and ongoing registration which is open this weekend.

FREE COMIC BOOK DAY

If you are geek inclined. May 4th/Star Wars Day, is tantamount to a religious holiday.

The fact that it falls on Free Comic Book Day this year is the equivalent of Santa and the Easter Bunny teaming up to create some kind of new Mega Holiday.

As always, Barrie’s comic haven Big B Comics will be hosting the day. Anyone heading to the festivities can score 4 free comics, with additional books for anyone bringing a food donation or in cosplay.

In addition, there will be tons of colouring, crafting and prize draws. The nerdastic day kicks off at 10am.

So, the Leafs lost. In Game 7. In Boston. AGAIN.

But this year you don’t have to crawl into bed for a month with kleenex and a bottle of Tequilia (that’s how everyone copes with disappointment…right?)

There are plenty of things to in the city by the lake to take your mind off the crippling, omnipresent existential agony of cheering for Toronto sports teams. Damn it…where’s that bottle?

Keep in mind that you can find all the events listed, as well as events coming in the days ahead on our events page.

Assuming everyone recovers from the double entendre of a long weekend and 4/20, it will be another packed ticket on the Barrie concert scene.

The Foxx brings the noise on Friday with a slate of metal and heavy alternative acts from around the province. On Saturday things slow down just a wee bit with one of Barrie’s favourite funk bands, The Noolands, headlining. Doors are at 9pm for both.

Elsewhere, Donaleigh’s has Get The Funk Out and Memphis Mudd. Flying Monkeys brings in Emberly A Duo and Dav Dickenson. And Dwayne Gretzky is at Mavrick’s.

SUNSET SPEEDWAY OPENING DAY

You know what’s great about racing? It’s a sport that doesn’t have a goaltender who lets in bad goals at the worst possible time. Ok, seriously WHERE IS THAT BOTTLE?

Anyway, this Saturday is the kickoff of Nascar season at Sunset Speedway. The Speedway has been producing some of the best racing talent in the country since they opened back in 1968. They hold races every Saturday through to September (weather permitting) and even offer drivers of any experience level to take a spin in the cars! Read up on it right here

TOONIE SALE

Dress For Success is back at the Bayfield Mall. It’s a great opportunity to score gently worn clothes for mega cheap, as low as $2.

The dresses are suitable for weddings, prom, summer parties. Shoes too! It all begins on Friday.
