BARRIE CONCERTS THIS WEEK: YOUR WEEKLY GUIDE TO THE CITY’S LIVE MUSIC SCENE
“Music has healing power. It has the ability to take people out of themselves for a few hours..” ― Elton John
As any veteran of Barrie’s live music scene will tell you, there aren’t many nights off here.
When you’re game for going out, the city by the Lake is guaranteed to have a gig for you every week. Whether you’re craving an alt rock blowout, an intimate jazz ensemble or a laid back acoustic set, Thursday through Saturday in Barrie are jammed with jams from local talent and edgy bands from across the region.
Barrie Concerts This Week: Oct. 7th include…
The Foxx Lounge
Thursday opens up the week at the lounge with a ticket led by Calgary’s Puttin’ On The FoiL. Cowtown’s premiere hillbilly punkers have been pumping out good time country-rock vibes since 2011. The best we can do to describe their sound would be…If Metallica and Hank Williams had a kid, Puttin’ On The Foil would be it.
If nothing else, it’s worth attending to hear a band with tracks like Comin’ In Hard, Drunk and Naked and Giver to the Liver. Also on the bill is Oshawa’s This Is A Crisis, Cakeface (London) and Barrie’s Among Monsters. All three are coming in off good summers with lots of gigs and impending new music.
MORE FOXX LOUNGE
Friday it’s a jammed ticket of punk and alt to blaze into the long weekend, with headliners Secret Circle Society and Dayglo Abortions.
Dayglo are the Canadian punk equivalent of the Grateful Dead; they’ve been around in one form or another forever and are still touring. Yet it could have been a much shorter career; the band was actually charged with obscenity in the late 80s, after a police officer’s daughter picked up a copy of ‘Here Today,’ As the band described in their bio page “the officer failed to appreciate the band’s irreverent sense of humor. Happily, all charges were dropped in 1990”.
Secret Circle Society hail from NYC. First formed in 2014, they’re a female fronted group that blend melodies, harmonies, rhythms and swagger into a high octane stage performance. They’ve shared the stage with A listers like The Misfits, Puddle Of Mudd, Fuel, Sebastian Bach(Skid Row), Hinder and Crazy Town.
Barrie’s Angry Spells, The Nasties (Guelph) and The Hysterics (Newmarket) round out the banger of a show.
Saturday Indian Handcrafts rolls into town to celebrate a decade of thrashing (and slaying) Despite being based on Skull Island (not really) they’ve put together ten years of music and gigs across the country and are coming in hot to mark their birthday. Joining the crew are Toronto’s Not Of and newly formed Grey Heaven Grey Earth.
And although he won’t advertise it…the Foxx’s grand papa Shane Heath has a birthday on the very same night. Making the party a double entendre of doom! (In the best sense of the word doom)
