The Weekender: 3 Things To Do

And just like that, we switch from +25 patio weather, to blowing snow and icy streets. (#BarrieInNovember)

But, regardless of the inevitable approach of winter, there are plenty of fun things to do and experience as we ramp up to Xmas and the holidays.

Read on for a few ideas to energize your weekend! And if you have an event or happening in Barrie you want to promote, let us know and we can post it to our events calendar!

The Weekender: 3 Things To Do

Take a Holiday Road Trip

There are quite a few holiday inspired drive through and walk through happenings around the region, including a few starting this weekend.

Blue Mountain kicked off Enchanted Forest this week; the entire Village will be decked out in garlands and bows. Ideal for a family trip full of festive sights and sounds.

Aside from the festive décor, there will be fire pits to warm by, holiday music and carolers and horse drawn carriage with Santa every Saturday. At night, you can take the one kilometer pedestrian pathways through the Village and around the Mill Pond to discover interactive Christmas light displays.

There’s also the Bluffs Winter Wonderland in Scarborough, and Holiday Light show in Vaughan. Hit up our Winter Wonderland Road Trip blog for more on each!

Free Santa Photos | The 400 Market

Santa will be back at The 400 Market starting this Saturday, and every Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm until Sunday, December 20th, 2020! 🎅

Santa will be a bit different this year to ensure COVID-19 safety measures for Santa and visitors. Instead of the regular Santa costume (open-faced), the Market will have a professionally designed, fully-masked costumed Santa.

The Santa photos are “Free” so please bring your own cameras and or phone cell phones. There are no costs and/or donations required.

And while you’re there, why not get a start on your holiday shopping?

Live Music

As always, there is plenty of tunes to be heard, if you know where to go. Musicians and restaurants have been among the hardest hit vocations in this pandemic, so if you can get out to support both while being safe, you should!

Playing this week; John Anderson at Flying Monkey’s, Big Furry Tractor at the Queen’s and Bill Nadeu at Malone’s Pint House. You can also hit up North Country BBQ for live music Thursday – Saturday from Owen Riegling, The Beresford’s and Rob Watts.

Keep in mind that we always want to hear from you about how we are doing! Reach out anytime to [email protected] with your feedback or story submissions.

Take In Live Music

The huge scale concerts might be in dry dock for the rest of the year. But there are actual, honest to goodness gigs happening across town this month!

Donaleigh’s, the Queen’s, North Country BBQ, the Bull and Barrel and Common Good cafe have all rolled out solo artists and bands to accompany your food and drinks in recent weeks. Considering how fluid the pandemic lockdown regulations could be in the fall, getting out to see a show is a luxury you should not pass up. And you can find a full list of gigs in Barrie every week right here!

Hit the Barrie Film Festival

The 23rd annual festival is a scaled down version, with fewer movies and of course no galas. But the BFF has partnered with Sunset Drive In to screen a terrific selection of independent flicks over the course of four days. The festival kicks off October 1st, with the Christopher Walken led drama Percy.

Also back will be the Short Film competition, which showcases films from local directors and international productions vying for prizes.

Open Air Downtown

The Downtown Barrie Business Association (BIA) and The City of Barrie are collaborating to bring Open Air Dunlop to downtown Barrie!

The festivities are running September 26th for four Saturdays. Dunlop Street East between Mulcaster Street and Clapperton Street will be closed from morning until midnight to vehicle traffic. Everyone is invited to bike or walk along the street to check out the downtown’s new streetscape, visit a local patio or shop, and discover local artists and their works.

If fall happens and there isn’t an Oktoberfest, did fall actually happen?

Luckily, we don’t need to solve that philosophical dilemma this year. Redline is back and hosting a socially distanced drive thru and dine in event to celebrate German beer.

On top of the terrific line of beer, there’s a German style menu which will be available for inside dining and outside! There’s also a live band, games and the release of there new line, Festbier.

Barrie Pride Halloween Pub Crawl

Join the Pride community for a socially distanced pub crawl to some of Barrie’s best establishments. Including stops at Grillicious Gourmet Tap and Grill, McReilly’s, Hooligans, Donaleighs and North Country. Prizes for Best Rainbow Halloween costume.

Learn to Write Legends, Mysteries, and Ghost Stories

Freaky Wizard Academy presents Legends, Mysteries and Ghost Stories, a four-part creativity series for Kids aged 9 to 12 years. Create a story, a comic book, a video or podcast to share with friends and family

Kids spend four Saturday morning sessions with Freaky Wizard to learn how to design a really great concept, draw storyboards create drafts, record sounds and video, and work with others to refine your stories into a creative production.

Take A Hike

The colours, they are fine at this time of year. So grace one of the city’s many walking and hiking spots before the onset of winter. It’s the ideal time to take some family photos or shoot a few insta videos. If you want to add some Halloween-esque creep to your walk, consider checking out the abandoned Splash Canyon water park in Midhurst, or one of the old Simcoe graveyards.
