YOUR WEEKLY GUIDE TO BARRIE’S LIVE MUSIC SCENE
“If I cannot fly, let me sing.” ― Stephen Sondheim
As any veteran of Barrie’s live music scene will tell you, there aren’t many nights off here.
If you’re game for going out, the city by the Lake is guaranteed to have a gig for you every week. Whether you’re craving an alt rock blowout, an intimate jazz ensemble or a laid back acoustic set, Thursday through Saturday in Barrie are jammed with jams from local talent and edgy bands from across the region.
FOXX LOUNGE…ON A WEDNESDAY??
Usually the domain of Open Mic night, this week the lounge opens it’s doors midweek to killer sounds from a killer band. Threat Signal (go to the About section on their FB page and look up Influences for all you need to know about their attitude) have been kicking around since the mid-2000s and come to town on their decade anniversary celebratory tour.
The Hamilton bangers pulled off the rare feat of having gained a following before ever playing a live show. The song ‘Rational Eyes’ catapulted to #1 on the international independent music website GarageBand.com and remained in the top position for over 2 years. Since then, they’ve scored a record deal and toured with the likes of All That Remains and Dillanger Escape Plan.
Barrie’s Lost Light leads the way as openers, as they kick off a mini Ontario run. Dead Beyond Fear and Wasaga’s Halfway Through Hell are also on hand to open the eve. Don’t forget to visit the merch table for a chance to pick up T’s and hats and such to show your support.
On Thursday it’s time to Spill Your Guts. Well, not literally. Well…maybe not literally.
Spill Your Guts comes to the lounge as one of just a handful of bands who originated in China (yes, THAT China) With current members from Scotland, Russia and Canada the group has gone through a ton of roster changes over the years but still managed to release couple of EPs and headline festivals in Asia and Europe. Toronto’s Hellbent and the Hammer’s Good Grief are on the ticket for support.
MORE FOX LOUNGE
Pure Grain Promo takes the lead to celebrate 15 years in the biz, with a weekend banger featuring a ton of GTA based talent. On Friday Barrie’s High Road Pilots and Mount Mural lead the way from the local circuit, with Toronto’s Wine Lips and Hot Garbage headlining.
All four have had a busy year, with High Road Pilots recently scoring a slot in the next edition of the Indie Concert series Breaking Sound. Wine Lips and Hot Garbage have been gigging across Canada and the U.S.
Saturday it’s more loud awesomeness… and a reunion. The Vegas Wake Up return to the stage after a few years out of the loop. Or possibly, in witness protection. Either way…it’s an event to be witnessed. Barrie’s Flight 97, Ink and Rosewood Annie round out the ticket. $10 with doors at 9pm.
