As we welcome summer amid reopenings, we can all indulge in notions of traditional summer fare like patios, barbecues…and road trips!

Barrie’s central location makes us a prime hub to launch car voyages through the warm weather months.  Every Thursday through September, we’ll bring a new Ontario destination you can reach in a reasonable travel time. And if you’ve got some suggestions, we want to hear them!

Road Trippin’ – Part 7

Haliburton is a definite destination if you are on the hunt for a hidden gem, that offers outdoor recreation, education and entertainment.

The forest is a unique, privately owned land located on over 100,000 acres of rolling hardwood forests, deep lakes, meandering rivers and extensive wetlands in the Haliburton Highlands.

There is no shortage of outdoorsy activities and wilderness adventure including the Wolf Centre, fishing, hiking, astronomy, wildlife observation, wolf howls, natural history presentations, guided experiences, and a full slate of educational programs.

If you do nothing else in Haliburton, be sure to check out the Canopy Tour experience. The 4 hour round trip includes

  • a scenic drive through the private forest
  • canoe ride across a wilderness lake
  • guided walk along the River Rapids
  • walk through the trees across a suspension bridge

On the way home, you can find plenty of delicious eateries in the town itself. Among the local favourites is Rhubarb Restaurant, located on the shores of Mirror Lake. The menu is a fantastic selection of hearty home made cooking.
