TAKE ON WINTER AND TAKE DOWN THE BLAHS

Gentle warning for those friends who are new to the Barrie area. Winters here are long. They are cold. There’s a lot of snow. You will, at some points, want to escape to tropical lands, only to return when winter has finally left the building (so, like, June).

Now, if you are a winter enthusiast, which some of you are, you may delight in this weather pattern. For the rest of us, we need a game plan.

Five To Dos To Beat The Barrie Winter Blues

Catch a Flick

Winter is a great excuse to hunker down, stay inside and enjoy some great cinema. Why not take the fam to the Cineplex and watch the latest blockbuster? Or take your beloved to see the latest romantic comedy concoction (p.s. if you are looking for sweet date ideas for your sweetie, check out our First Date Ideas That Don’t Totally Suck series here).

If you are craving something a bit more high-brow, you can also check out Reel Stories. Part of the fantastic film offerings from the Barrie Film Festival, the Reel Stories mini-fest provides an opportunity to “discover extraordinary things about the world” through documentaries and dramas inspired by true events and real people. Happening February 20 – 23, tickets are a deal at only $10 per person.

Cheer On The Colts

As the much-loved Stompin’ Tom famously opined… “the best game you can name is the good ol’ Hockey game”. Whether you’re a die-hard hockey lover or a fair-weather fan, there’s something undeniably Canadian about heading to the rink and watching a game.

Cheering on your hometown Barrie team will also undoubtedly raise your winter-dampened spirits a little. Click here for the full game schedule.

Cozy Up With a Coffee

Picture this. You’re snuggled up in a cozy corner with a great book or a great conversation partner. You glance out the window and watch as thick snowflakes fall lazily to the ground, covering the streets in a blanket of magical, white coldness. Sounds pretty darn great right? Its also another great way to fight the winter blues in Barrie.

Whether you are in the south end or the north end or downtown, there are many great cafes and coffee joints to choose from. Williams Fresh Cafe, as well as Creative Bean in the south end are both top-notch. If you are downtown, Casa Cappucino, Bohemia or Lazy Tulip are also great places to get your java.

Get Creative

Help combat the winter blahs by getting a little creative and engaging in those creative pursuits and projects you’ve been putting off.  This winter, check out The Drawing House, Art in House or Creative Cafe. From an artistic community to art supplies to opportunities to try out a new artistic medium, these establishments are great places to get your creative juices flowing.
