Road Trippin’ – Nicholson
Nicholson
Situated due north of Barrie, Nicholson is located on the outskirts of Chapleau in Sudbury.
It was a lumber mill town that used to be home to approximately 400 residents. But today it’s a ghost town.
The town was most known for the Austin-Nicholson mill, which was the largest producer of railroad ties in Canada in the early 1900s. The mill burned down in 1933, leading to the financial collapse of the town.

Although abandoned, most buildings were relatively intact by the early 1970’s. There was a push to maintain the area in preservation as a historical site. Some years after those plans fell through, another fire destroyed much of the site.
Today the store foundations are evident as are a few intact cottages of Austin and Nicholson
Thick brush has overgrown much of the village site, but the remains of the school and a few cottages can be spotted, along with the ruins of the Catholic Church, and mill foundations. The foundations of the machine shop, blacksmith shop are also visible, as well as the boathouse.
