Barrie’s Very Own Professional Soccer Team – 1812 FC Unveiled

We are late at getting on this particular bandwagon, we apologize. We may be late, but we are very excited about a professional soccer team coming to Barrie (our president only accepts it being called football, he’s from across the pond, oh well).

He played soccer (football) for many years in Scotland, England and N. Ireland himself, so he is especially enthused about this announcement. Mind you he wasn’t very good, and one of the managers he played for once described him as “deceptively slow.”

Anyway, we digress. We think Barrie is an ideal city to launch a professional team and will only get better as the city expands.
The 1812 FC team is headed by managing partner Andrew Weilgus supported by his executive team, Peter Raco, David Goldstein, Marl Cristante, Will Devellis and Ronan Cordelle. Andrew has the right pedigree to lead the application of the expansion to compete in the 2021 League1 Ontario season. He is co-owner of Atlantic City FC who play in the National Premier Soccer League. Andrew brings the financial infrastructure required to build this franchise. To help on the business side, he has strong support from Peter Raco; Peter comes with an impressive financial background.

In setting up the team they have teamed up with Barrie Soccer Club who will handle the technical side of the team.  This brings a strong local influence as Barrie Soccer club has a rich history and has been in existence for 52 years

If you wonder about where the unusual name of the club 1812 FC came from? It came from the founding of Barrie as a settlement itself, which occurred due to the War of 1812. Their club badge has the horseshoe in it reflecting the Golden Horseshoe.
So what can we expect, initially playing in 2021 League 1 of Ontario their ambition does not stop there. With the support of the community or Barrie, could they get to the Canadian Premier League? I am sure that with the people leading this initiative, it is at least on their radar.

Three Tips To Avoid Working From Home Burnout

Three Tips To Avoid Working From Home Burnout

Those of us fortunate enough to have remote jobs can be grateful for a few things like the lack of a time-sucking commute and more time with the family.

But…anyone who has been doing the work from home thing for a while is probably feeling the mental heat. Chances of a burnout can be high, if you’re not careful.

Over time, even the benefits of working from home can devolve into stressful situations. Without self-imposed boundaries, our time saved on the commute can lead to extra hours poured into work. Without a healthy regiment of self-care throughout the day,  anxiety and stress can build up. And that leaves you primed for a meltdown.

Luckily, Barrie is chock full of tools and providers to help navigate Covid, while maintaining productivity.

Three Tips To Avoid Working From Home Burnout

MEDITATION

Taking a break from your work to practice self-care will cut down on the aggro, and give you some time to get grounded.

Meditation is a great way to find a bit of peace during the day, even if it’s just 15 minutes. The Barrie Meditiation centre offers online streams of guided meditation every week.

There’s also the Centre For Inner Freedom, which offers meditation alongside other stress reduction programs and mindfulness techniques.

EXERCISE

We know…quarantine is the perfect excuse to let your entire workout and fitness fall by the wayside and eat ice cream for dinner twice a week.

But you know that your physical and emotional wellbeing are interconnected. And when it comes to experiencing burnout, neither are off the hook.

There are alot of online options, including instructor led video workouts from Core Evolution here in Barrie.

There is also a virtual walk/run for mental health later this month, with proceeds going to support RVH. So back away from the desk and get your muscles moving!

DISTRACT YOUR KIDS

If you have kiddos running around it can be, how to put this politely…challenging to keep them at bay for hours on end.

Beyond Netflix or Angry Birds, there are a couple of online options in town to occupy their minds while you hit the grind stone.

The library has weekly video and zoom meetings, including story time and craft making. For the older kids, the city has put together a digital hub with virtual recreation activities, like learning to juggle or building bee hotels.

And if you are looking for something a little more active, Barrie Karate is providing a 4 week class intro to martial arts, for all ages.

What’s your energy like? Check it! I’ve been described as an energetic person, even at my sickest. All that envelopes my wellness philosophy is tied to energy. Even my personality-type profile is “ENERGIZER.” Talk about being defined by something! When I started to drink my amazing water back in 2018, my energy shifted so much that clients were approaching me and asking me what I’m doing differently. My chiropractor, integrated medical team, and others couldn’t believe the shift. Energy is a marker you just cannot hide. So, grab some “living water,” learn about how hydrogen is essential to fuel us and heal us, how water can be measured in millivolts, and how you can plug into some additional energy. Change always starts with education and information. Take in the research, learn, then APPLY it to gain wisdom. Until you put into application what you learn, you remain stagnant. What have you learned lately to improve ENERGY? Do you suffer from #Cravings ? . . The upside of craving is that it is a conditioned response that you can unlearn . . Here are a few of my top tips to reduce cravings : . . 💫 Start identifying why that craving is coming on- are you ACTUALLY hungry? Are you bored? Are you feeling another emotion ? . . 💫 Use the 5 second rule to stop thinking about a craving (ie. when you are craving sweet or salty, count backwards from 5 , and re evaluate that craving afterwards) . . 💫 #MOVE – march in place, do some squats, or walk up the stairs . . 💫 Get a herbal tea that you love (or have some warm water with lemon) . . 💫 Make sure that your blood sugar levels are balanced (your body often craves sugar when it is crashing ) . . 💫 Work with a naturopathic doctor to ensure your #stress levels are managed, rule out any deficiencies & ensure that you are getting a proper #sleep. . . . #naturopathicdoctor #naturopathicmedicine #ndbarrie #naturopath #wellness #barrienaturopath #wellwomentribe #sugarcravings #womenshealth #healthyhormones #hormonebalance #balanceyourhormones #exercise #moveyourbody #sugar #sugarcravings

Laundry Quandry: How To Keep Safe at The Laundromat

How To Tour Barrie As A Tourist (Even When You’re Not)

You can only live in that tattered (but still awesome) old Tragically Hip shirt and torn jeans combo for so long. Eventually, you’re going to have to do your laundry.

Not everyone is lucky enough to have an ensuite washer/dryer in their condo or house. Many of us use shared facilities, either in their building or at public laundromats. And that’s a blood pressure spiking scenario for many in the age of Corona.

So how best to keep the clothes Covid free?

There isn’t any research yet as to how the virus can live on fabric and clothing.

And while laundromats have been deemed essential services in Ontario, there hasn’t been much from authorities in the way of protocols for ‘mats.

Coinamatic, one of the largest operator of laundry machines in apartment buildings and condos throughout Canada, has a printable poster outlining safe laundry practices.

In Toronto, the Public Health’s Infection Prevention and Control fact sheet suggests providing hand sanitizer in laundry rooms.

Here in Barrie, the city’s website hasn’t provided any specifics on shared laundry facilities. Since coins are also a potential transmitter, some residences and hotels in Canada have removed the fee from coin-operated machines. If you live in a place with coin-operated machines, it’s worth asking your property manager if they could do the same.

As for laundromats, stick to the basics. Using gloves, keeping distance, washing in hot water instead of cold. And use lined baskets to transport the clothes.

Be sure to check each laundromat’s website to ensure they are still open, or if their hours have been modified.
