It’s All About Easter at Polski Deli!

Bunnies, chicks and chocolate – it’s all about Easter at Polski Deli.  Celebrations around the world have many different traditions.

It's All About Tradition!

The traditions brought to Canada by new immigrants only add to the beauty of each and every celebration.

One of the most well-known Polish Easter traditions is Pisanki, the 5,000 year old art of hand painted Easter eggs.  Painted in the batik style, patterns are drawn onto the eggs in wax.  The eggs are then immersed in natural dyes, taken out and heated to remove the wax leaving behind beautiful intricate patterns.

Those along with many other handmade artifacts make Easter very beautiful.

The Easter Meal!

Today we’ve also learned how important the traditional Easter meals are as well.

On the Saturday of the Easter weekend a small basket of food to be served next day is taken to the church to be blessed.

The basket contains Pisanki, sausage or ham, a piece of cake and a sugar lamb.

Sunday morning is a cold breakfast of ham, sausage, roast meats, pate, eggs, horseradish relish and of course Babka (Sweet yeast cake)!

There may also be treats of Sernik (cheesecake) or Mazurek (Shortbread cakes), to name a couple.

Have you Ever!!!

On a more amusing note is the practice of Smigus-Dyngus or National Water Fight Day on Easter Monday.  Maybe not practiced here as much, but still going strong in Poland!

Check Out Polski Deli!!

Polski Deli at 555 Mapleview Dr. West can sure help lighten the work load of getting ready for the holidays!

Whether you favor the meats and/or cheeses from the deli or delectable cakes and pastries – as the holiday comes closer there is so much to choose from.

Don’t wait just for the holidays though.  Polski Deli always has a great variety of European staples; pickles, jams, sauces, cookies, coffee and of course CHOCOLATE!  Remember to make a list so nothing is forgotten!

And the Kids Say...

The neighboring school children tell us that “Polski’s has the best sandwiches on the west side of town and a great hot table too!”

Owner, Joanna would like to give a huge virtual Thank you to every customer as well as the landlord – the Skandalakis family, and property manager, Kevin Lowe for all their support over the last year!

Just remember – It’s all about Easter at Polski Deli!

For the Love of Indian! – Tandoori Kingdom

After being through yet another Shutdown, I think that we’re all experiencing a bit of cabin fever.

Days are becoming longer and the feeling that winter will soon be over increases our need to “take on life again!”

Thoughts of spring arriving also bring a change in the way we eat, and for the love of Indian food you should check out Tandoori Kingdom.

For the Love of Indian - Tandoori Kingdom!

This is the perfect time to check out Tandoori Kingdom, the best place for Indian food in Barrie.  Tandoori Kingdom doesn’t use shortcuts or sub-par ingredients.  Their spices are exquisitely fresh and their clay oven is hot.

Although spring is in the air, there are many choices of ‘heat’ to thoroughly warm you from the inside out.

Nirmal and his staff have been busy introducing different dishes to their spring menu.  Some are favorites returned, others – new and exciting.  I’ve chosen my favorites here.

Check out the New Menu Options!

I must say that Indian cuisine is an excellent choice for vegetarians and vegans as there is a wide variety of veggies, cheese and lentil-based dishes on the menu at Tandoori Kingdom.

Curries, as well, are a very popular choice; easily ordered with the ‘heat’ you most enjoy.

The Bhindi Masala is one of our most enjoyable!  Made with okra, onions, tomatoes, spices and herbs, I love it served with a side of rice – Yummy!

Paneer Bhurji is a very healthy menu option. Paneer (Indian cheese) is delightfully combined with tomatoes, onions, capsicum and peas, served with rice and Naan. It’s so filling yet doesn’t make me want to curl up and take a nap like a turkey dinner does!

And of course...

Of course, lamb chops conjure up spring-like feelings, and lamb is my absolute favorite dish to order at Tandoori Kingdom.  Exquisite!  Marinated chops are grilled hot and fast – coming to us tender and delicious.

For the Love of Indian – Tandoori Kingdom leads you into spring with their tantalizing yet healthy menu choices.

Take the drive out Blake Street; it’s time to order – I think!

SAY IT! – SAY MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

TANDOORI KINGDOM SAYS "MERRY CHRISTMAS" TO BARRIE

They’re saying it!  Listen…The staff and owners of Tandoori Kingdom at 428 Blake Street in Barrie are wishing everyone a Merry Christmas!

Actually they’ve reached out to us to have a special message sent to everyone in Barrie.  Nirmal Mangat, one of the owners at Tandoori Kingdom would like everyone to take a moment and share the joy of the season by saying Merry Christmas to someone.

So many of us have been struggling with holidays this year, and the inability to keep our traditional gatherings due to the Pandemic.

Nirmal is asking each of us to reach out.  Reach out to someone that you haven’t spoken to lately, or someone you safely cross paths with during your time spent out and about.

Even better yet, use our comment section to wish your “Special Someone” a Merry Christmas.

You see, Nirmal is concerned!  Concerned about neighbors and families that may be struggling with loneliness more so than usual this year.

As a business owner in Barrie, Nirmal has firsthand knowledge of what our safety protocols have cost us.  We need to stay safe, but we must remember that this season is one of caring and sharing.  We CAN do this safely!  Walking a pet?  I’m sure that you always stay socially distanced while doing so.  Wish others a Merry Christmas as you pass – Then tell us about it!  Let’s start a “Say Merry Christmas” campaign!!

Let others know – sing it if you will – as you’re out and about!  Bring goodwill to all!

Do you have a neighbor that is alone? Reach out – phone or drop a note to the door; this could mean far more than you would ever imagine!

These random acts of kindness bring a special ray of sunshine to those alone or unable to go out.  Tandoori Kingdom thinks that this campaign is important!

In fact they’re offering each person who has said Merry Christmas to someone a 10% discount on their next meal!

Go in, or order takeout by phone at (705) 503 1400, and let them know you’ve taken part in the “Say Merry Christmas” campaign….it’s that easy.

This year – shout it out… Tandoori Kingdom has.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

EAT YOUR WAY RIGHT ACROSS THE COUNTRY!

EAT YOUR WAY ACROSS THE COUNTRY!

ARE YOU A "FOODIE"?

From one coast to another there are a lot of “foodies” in Canada.  We have such cultural ethnicity.  The other thing that we have is an extremely diverse landscape with each Province and Territory offering up their own uniqueness.  On top of that we have our local areas which have many different menus to tantalize us even further.

Starting on the East Coast we can try everything from a Jigg’s Dinner, Lobster Rolls to Screech Rum.  As we head into Quebec we all seem pretty familiar with Poutine, maple syrup and tortierre.

It’s in Ontario where things become a little different.  Here we are certainly known for our outstanding wineries and craft breweries, but our favorite foods are as diverse as the population!  We have our seasonal treats like corn on the cob or garden fresh toasted tomato sandwiches, however as food goes – I think our diversity shines in our “street eats”.

If  you were to Google the favorite food in Toronto you’d likely find it’s a veal sandwich, Ottawa – Beaver Tails, Barrie – Skewers, a Korean BBQ restaurant and so on.  We have different flavors on every corner it seems.

As we head into Manitoba it becomes very particular again.  There you’d find mouth watering pickerel most often pan-fried with a bit of butter.  Saskatoon actually got it’s name from the all-important Saskatoon berry either made into a pie or jam.  Alberta is beef, beef, and more beef, with Vancouver being salmon and of course Nanaimo bars.  In Nunavut we find the somewhat strange Muktuk (fried whale) or, surprisingly…Shwarma!  Finally in the northwest Territories we are told Artic Char and game meats such as caribou and muscox are the favorites.

Travelling through Canada is divine for “foodies”.  We have so many very unique tastes to savor.  Again though, I have to say how nice it is to be in Central Ontario – Barrie to be exact.  I love our diverse menu offerings.  There are so many exciting flavors!  One of the “favs” for sure is the Korean Street Food found at Skewers, just up from Downtown at 9 Clapperton Street.  Don’t take my word for it though – go ahead – try it for yourself!
