Tandoori Kingdom takes us to India!

Travelling to India in April gives you a whole new perspective on weather!  In that vast country you can swim or ski, sunbathe or visit the cloud gardens with ease.

While travelling through India you can gain true appreciation of the variety of cultural dishes as well.  Each region seems to have their very own spectacular dishes to choose from!

Choosing a "Home Stay"

If you ever have a chance to arrange a “Home Stay” you would sample cuisine that you maybe couldn’t find easily anywhere else; better yet you can take lessons on the preparation – if you wish!

There are actually a number of places where you can take cooking classes.  If you’re truly serious some now offer week-long programs as well.

If you’re going to the effort of learning to prepare your favorite Indian dishes, then you should learn how to eat them correctly too.  In the south – that means eating food with your fingers!  I have heard over and over that the dishes taste even better that way!

Choose Your Cuisine!

Many of the “Home Stays” are environmentally sensitive, vegan or teaching Ayurvedic treatment dishes.  There are also as many that teach the meat and fish preparations so loved in the cuisine.  What a wonderful way to visit yet sample so much culture!

April in India is still festival season, just not so many due to the heat.

And the Festivals...

Early in the month Srinagar, Kasmir is truly the most breathtaking with their Tulip Festival!

Then in Mumbai, the Maharashtrian New Year Parade takes place.  The largest parade is in the morning in Girgaum where the streets are jam packed with floats and sari-clad women on their motorcycles!

There’s even a celebration of Rats at the Karni Mata Festival in the 600 year old temple there.

The temple is dedicated to an ancient mystic who people believe was a reincarnation of the goddess Durga, and the souls of devotees are said to reside in the rats!

Then of course is Baisakki – a harvest festival, a Punjabi New Year Festival and Founding of the Sikh religion all rolled into one.  There are many feasts, folk music and fairs, particularly in Amritsar.

However, travel plans still seem very questionable – maybe think of these travels for next year.

Tandoori Kingdom Presents Springtime in India

Oh how we relish these longer days with sunshine and warmth – now imagine Springtime in India!  Tandoori Kingdom would like to help your imagination!

Here In Canada -

Here we watch the icicles melting and cheer on the sunshine.  In Canada we’re still in the dreaming stage…dreaming of gardens filled with color, weather warm enough to be unencumbered by layers of clothing, and visions of children playing in the parks.

In India this is both harvest and planting season.  There are so many festivals to celebrate.  Festivals celebrating spring itself, religious festivals, harvest festivals and planting festivals.

Only 3 Main Seasons!

Spring in India is based on the Hindu calendar rather than a change in weather.  Known to have only three seasons – winter, summer and monsoon, springtime is a wonderful time to travel and take part in the many layers of culture found there.

Starting in Mid-February to Mid-April, the season begins earlier than here.  One of the first celebrations is Vasant Panchami – the beginning of spring.

Mughal Gardens

Then for an entire month the residential gardens of the President of India are open for public viewing.  A 15 acre estate knows as the Mughal Gardens surrounding the residence are a riot of springtime color.  With roses, tulips and bougainvillea as the mainstay plants the beauty is spectacular.  Even found are very specially planted themed gardens of bonsai, peace and tranquility etc.

As mentioned here in Canada we’re still in the dreaming stage!  If you’re lucky enough to have a greenhouse you may actually be in the planting stage and planning where everything is going to go.

During the springtime months India is already feeling temperatures of 27-35 degrees Celsius.

Bamboo harvest (Chapchor kut) is celebrated shortly before the planting of spring wheat.

There are celebrations of New Years for the Baha’is and Zoroastrians’ as well as Palm Sunday and Easter.

and...HOLI

However, one of the most colorful festivals actually known as Festival of Color or Holi is a two day celebration known nearly throughout the world now.

The festival stems from pranks that Lord Krishna was known for.

It is said that he enjoyed throwing colored powder on the village girls and wetting them, making the village a riot of bright colors during the 2 day event.

Nowadays the colored powder is still thrown but water guns are used to aim well and wet!!

Whatever your heritage – springtime in Canada is certainly worth celebrating!

Chicken, Ribs, Pork even Salmon at Irie Jerk!

Oh my!  My mouth waters every time I think about dinner ordered from Irie Jerk!  Deciding to find out more, we connected with Tinee Campbell to “Uncover” their story.

Irie Jerk was created in a very unusual manner.  Three men, now known as the “3 Fathers of Irie Jerk” started out by bringing their home cooked meals as lunch while on Shift at Honda.  It didn’t take long for other employees to notice the wonderful aromas of the meals and ask if they could have some.  The delicious meals soon became a standard lunch time fare for over 80+ employees!

Realizing that authentic Jamaican cuisine was so well received in the area, the decision to open a restaurant was easy.  On February 22nd, Irie Jerk celebrates its 1st year anniversary!   What a year they’ve had!  A new restaurant opening just before the world shut down due to COVID!  We really must celebrate with them!

Everything on the menu at Irie Jerk is made in-house.  Their recipes are so protected that the “3 Fathers” are the only ones to prepare and season the meat!

Known as “The Best Jerk North of the Island”, their menu takes jerk seasoning to a whole new level!

When we’re allowed to travel, Jamaica is a stop I often make.  I love the everyday dishes on the island – and that’s what I find on the Irie Jerk menu.  Everything from Jerk Chicken to Curried Goat…even Oxtail!

Between Curried and Jerk meats there’s much to choose from.  On Fridays and Saturdays there’s even Jerk Salmon!  Truly, I can’t wait to try that dish!

Because of their one year anniversary this month, there are some extra nice specials to be had.
