THE BEST OF BARRIE GIGS THIS WEEK

Music Is The Wine That Fills The Cup of Silence” – Robert Fripp

As any veteran of Barrie’s live music scene will tell you, there aren’t many nights off here.

If you’re game for going out, the city by the Lake is guaranteed to have a gig for you every week. Whether you’re craving an alt rock blowout, an intimate jazz ensemble or a laid back acoustic set, Thursday through Saturday in Barrie are jammed with jams from local talent and edgy bands from across the region.

And if you’re an emerging group playing gigs in town, we want to hear from you! Send the finer points to stu@barrieuncovered.ca and we’ll post your shows here and on our events page.

Happening this week on the stage in Barrie…

FOXX LOUNGE

Punk is alive and well in Canada, and has been for the better part of almost five decades. In fact, outside of the traditional birth places of the genre (New York, Detroit and England) Toronto played a pivotal role in punk’s ascendancy. And this week, one of Hogtown’s longest serving punk rockers bring the noise to Barrie. Random Killing has been a fixture on the punk scene since the mid 80s, playing the circuit as loudly as most. They take over the Foxx stage on Thursday to celebrate 35 years. If you want to hear punk from almost the beginnings of punk, this is your ticket. And if you get a chance, ask them how one of their songs got used on Sesame Street. Supported by Toronto’s Armed and Hammered, Jack Spades out of Sault Ste. Marie and Barrie’s The Speed Humps.

MORE FOXX LOUNGE

FRIDAY – Although it might be tough to match the loudness of Thursday’s Punk perfection, Friday night will take come close. The Lounge features Ac/Dc cover band Amy/DC, playing tunes from the Bon Scott era. Expect alot of noise and alot of dirty deeds. Probably done cheaply. (C’mon…you know we HAD to throw that in) Barrie’s EpiFats are on hand to support them.

SATURDAY – Roxodus may be dead, but Foxodus lives on! 53rd and 3rd Shows packs in a quintet of quality acts to close out the week. Including Toronto’s The Celebration Army, making their Barrie debut. These guys bring a definite classic sound to the stage, with hints of funk, R&B and groove spread throughout their tunes. Barrie’s Dead Mechanics and Madison Mueller join the Army, which is a nice touch for Madison. She, like the Noolands were unceremoniously dumped when Roxodus abruptly closed up shop. Also on the ticket are Aurora’s Church on Sunday (who will instantly make you hungry when you visit their FB page) and Peterborough’s James Higgins. Doors at 9pm with cash at the door!
