We love how Barrie events make the city come alive in the summer!
During the months of July and August, there are too many activities, festivals, and events to count. Barrie’s summer events offer a bit of everything, from musical entertainment to classic cars, and many of them are free or are inexpensive, and therefore, ideal for an interesting (and cheap!) date.
1. Get Set, Go! At The Barrie Waterfront Half Marathon
Whether you lace up and run, or come out to cheer, the Barrie Waterfront Half Marathon is held every year at the beginning of June. Participants can choose between a half marathon, relay kids run, or five and ten kilometre races, all of which involve relatively flat routes in and around the lake. Sign up early, find some friends, and get ready to take on the challenge! An added bonus is that this race takes place early in the season, and there’s a chance for cooler running temps.
2. Discover New Music at The Jazz and Blues Festival
It’s undeniable. The music of jazz and blues still has a cool factor. While it may not be for everyone, there’s only one way to find out if it’s for you. Check out this local Barrie music festival! What’s more, the centre stage is typically in Heritage Park in downtown Barrie, and it’s free to stroll past. The Barrie Jazz and Blues Festival is held in the second two weeks of June every year. It features artists from all across the country, and takes place at various venues around the city.
3. Explore Local Flavours During Barrielicious
This delicious food festival takes place in July in the heart of summer harvest. Designed to highlight local produce, and showcase independent Barrie and surrounding area restaurants, this festival is not to be missed for all the foodies and those seeking to support the local farm scene. The Medley Food and Drink Festival comes around in the third week of July, seeking to offer the best food, beverages and chefs all under one roof, complete with workshops, music, and giveaways.
4. Experience Beer Garden and Bands at The Barrie Waterfront Festival
Can’t get out of the city for in May? Go for your own adventure in the city at Barrie’s Waterfront Festival. There are exciting bands and a beer garden at this great party at Heritage Park.
5. Get in Touch with Your Inner Artist at Kempenfest
Celebrating the prolific art scene of Barrie and surrounding communities, Kempenfest has been running every August for nearly 50 years on the Barrie Waterfront. Touted as one of Ontario’s top 100 festivals, the event brings together hundreds of artisans and antique dealers to show their work and to gain exposure for artisan craft.
6. Be a Kid Again at Barrie Promenade Days
The fun of Promenade Days never gets old! On Canada Day weekend, downtown and the waterfront are filled with people, food vendors, shopping, music and entertainment plus a midway attraction. Expect to see exciting programming at Barrie’s Meridian Place in Memorial Square.
7. Drive-in Without the Car at The Barrie Film Festival Outdoor Film Series
Summers in Barrie are the best. Enjoy your favourite movies in the brand-new Meridian Place in downtown’s Memorial Square. Simply bring your lawn chair and your popcorn on Wednesdays at dusk. You can round out the evening with a late-night walk along the beach and dip your toes in the water.
Are you inspired to take on the exciting summer events in Barrie? We sure are!
