Get Ready Get Set Garden

Are you ready? Get ready Get set Garden…A week or so ago, Barrie Uncovered had the chance to discuss the excitement of spring with Jenna Zardo of Urban Pantry Barrie. This group is a community-driven food program aligned with the Canadian Mental Health Association. With three community programs running, Community Gardens, Community Cooking Classes and Barrie Good Food Box, they touch many citizens in our city

    Building Community Togetherness

Even if you don’t have an expansive lawn here in Barrie, there are gardening opportunities. Register with the City of Barrie for a plot in one of the many Community Gardens. This is a great way to grow not only flowers and veggies but also communities. There is nothing better than a friendship grown over a garden. With 11 gardens on the go and several more set to be constructed over the next year, new communities are blossoming everywhere. Re-renting a plot must be done annually by October 31, with new gardeners registrations accepted starting November 1 annually through the City of Barrie.

    More Important than Ever

    Get Ready Get Set Garden

This is the time every year when gardening season kicks into full gear. The diehards have already been at it for months, but with springtime and good weather approaching, even non-green thumbs might feel inclined to tackle a gardening project.

This year, gardening feels even more critical. While we are locked down in our homes, it can be a mental challenge. To get through, some people meditate, some people work out, while some love to garden. That’s why, even during these challenging times, we’re trying to encourage as many people as possible to start gardening.

The great thing about gardening is how inexpensive you can get started with it. There’s no reason why you can’t begin to for less than $50. That money will go a long way to reducing food insecurities in your household, give your family an incredible feeling of accomplishment, and attach people to their communities in a unique fashion.

    Food Share Activities

    Get Ready Get Set Garden

Countries worldwide have started ‘food share’ activities, Barrie included.  It is a pleasure to share your garden bounty with others as each crop becomes available.  The City of Barrie also has volunteers to offer advice and suggestions should you be a beginner gardener.

If you are a seasoned gardener, you may already have seedlings started under grow lights or in your sunniest window, but others may be starting their dreaming by thumbing through the seed catalogues.  There is simply nothing better than a hot cup of tea, thoughts of your garden and the delightful colours found in a seed catalogue.

We’re excited to see what you create in your gardens. Make sure to tag us to show us what projects you’re tackling this spring. If there’s a topic you think we missed leave a comment and we’ll try to get to it.
