Urban Pantry Barrie

Urban Pantry Barrie, a CMHA initiative that is funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, is a vital, grassroots movement for every resident in the city.

Many of us don’t realize how deeply important not-profit groups are and what they succeed in achieving!

Urban Pantry Barrie and The Good Food Box

Urban Pantry Barrie

The Good Food Box program, initiated by Urban Pantry Barrie is a monthly, pre-order program for a box of wholesome seasonal fruit and veggies.  It has become one of the most affordable ways to eat good, healthy food.  It is also one of the most important ways that families with food insufficiencies can afford to create nourishing meals.

The program is open to all Barrie Residents, making it a very successful and convenient way of shopping.

The Local Need For Help

Urban Pantry Barrie

The local need for help with accessing fresh produce is on the rise and the need for Urban Pantry Barrie’s program is increasing daily.

Any resident in Barrie can access the program to assist with monthly grocery costs, but residents can also help others enormously by becoming a donor.  For the cost of $17.00 a month, recipients receive 20 – 25 lbs of fresh produce delivered to their front porch.

Urban Pantry Barrie has partnered with Barrie Families Unite to allow the best access possible to the program.  Each month just shy of $2000.00 is needed to support 115 households in Barrie with this fresh produce program.

Would you sign up to be a monthly donor of 1 or 2 Good Food Boxes a month at $17 each?  If so, click here.

Donations are also accepted via etransfer.

Cauliflower Soup with Walnut Crumb Topping

Prep Time: 10 minutes. Total time: 30 minutes Serves: 4

For the soup:

2 tbsp olive oil

1 onion, chopped

3 cloves garlic, finely chopped

1 potato, peeled and diced

1 kg cauliflower, roughly cut into florets (s.slb)

4 cups vegetable stock

1 cup milk of your choice

Pinch of cayenne pepper

2 tsp lemon juice

Salt and pepper to taste

For the crumb topping: (optional)

2 tbsp olive oil

50 g walnut crumbs

1 clove of garlic, crushed or finely grated

1 tsp paprica

Pinch of cayenne pepper

Salt and pepper to taste

For the Soup

Urban Pantry Barrie

Heat 2 tbsp olive oil in a deep saucepan that has a lid.

Add onion and garlic and cook until soft and beginning to colour.

Add potato, cauliflower and vegetable stock.  The stock probably won’t be quite enough to cover the cauliflower – but it’ll cook down as it softens.  Season with a little salt and pepper before bringing to a simmer, covering and cooking for about 10 minutes, or until the cauliflower is soft.

While the soup is cooking, make your crumb topping.

Once potato and cauliflower are soft, add milk and cayenne pepper to the saucepan.  Stir to combine, then remove from heat.

Use a food processor or blender to blend until smooth.  You may need to do this in batches.

Return pureed soup to the saucepan, taste to adjust for seasoning and stir through the lemon juice.  Bring back up to heat to serve.

Serve with a generous spoonful of crumb topping and a sprinkle of finely topped parsley.

For the crumb topping:

Heat 2 tbsp of olive oil in a frypan to moderate heat.

add all remaining ingredients and fry for 5-10 minutes, stirring often.  You want the crumb to be crispy, golden and deeply flavoured.
