It’s good for the body, mind, and soul

Ever wanted to go for a swim in the frigid temperatures of a Simcoe County winter? Perhaps not. Not yet, anyway. But if so, you’re not alone! Cold water swimming is growing in popularity despite notions of its extremity. It seems there are benefits beyond an adrenaline rush that are becoming increasingly appealing to newcomers.

The first and most important question is why?

There are a variety of health benefits to cold water swimming. Amazingly, these swims can boost a person’s white blood cell count and improve their immune system. Additionally, it can improve circulation, reduce stress, and even increase your libido! The endorphins released during cold water swims can also link to treating depression.

Plus, it’s a great way to make new friends!

I recently traveled to Dock Road Park to see for myself. There, I met enthusiasts of all backgrounds and experience levels. Newcomers and veterans alike gathered with the same goal in mind.

The next question you may be asking yourself relates to safety. Just how safe is cold water swimming?

Safety is a top priority for cold water swimmers. Understanding that every person is different allows for safe, enjoyable experiences for all. Furthermore, knowing your limits when taking a dip is essential.

While the site can appear intimidating, the environment and participants are all inviting. This community of swimmers encourages any interested parties to spectate and, when ready, to join them in the water. Additionally, cold water swimmers should refrain from going in unattended.

Each swimmer needs to adhere to safety guidelines and go at their own pace. The importance of health wellness and body positivity is emphasized.

Michael Catania is a frequent swimmer and passionate advocate for cold water swimming. Over the years, that passion has ignited a flame within others. Catania attributes much of the positivity throughout his day to these peaceful moments.

“There’s a body sensation that you don’t know about that’s calling for you.”

There are levels to this, so work your way up

Beginner and life coach Jeff Aldridge participated in his second swim during my visit. While his nerves fluttered before his turn, Aldridge was not discouraged. Encouragement from others got him into the water.

Moreover, the resulting outcome saw Aldridge spend nearly two full minutes in the water. Impressive!

Conversely, Josef Polcz, 63, is a veteran of the game. Polcz has enjoyed cold water swimming for a couple of decades now, notching a wealth of experience on his belt. Additionally, Polcz has taken part in Ironman competitions in his earlier years. He’s even been involved in annual cold water swimming competitions in Vermont!

It just goes to show that this pastime goes beyond leisure, invigorating camaraderie amongst like-minded individuals.

    Cold Water Swimming

Positive experiences gained from cold water swimming can be translated into everyday life. Stepping out of your comfort zone to embrace new experiences builds character. In short, cold water swimming is both refreshing and therapeutic. What more could you ask for?

If you haven’t already, give it a try! You won’t regret it.
