Simcoe’s Rovers pick up two more wins at home

The Simcoe County Rovers FC continues to impress in their League1 Ontario debut.

Moreover, the women (5-1-1) rebounded to pick up their first win in three weeks, while the men (4-1-2) improve to 3-0-1 over a four-game stretch. Additionally, the women’s club remains undefeated at home this season with a 4-0 record.

Returning home after a two-game road trip, the Rovers took to the pitch at 2 pm against FC London in the Women’s Premier division. In the 84th minute, Brianne Desa and Madelaine Hill scored two goals a minute apart to put the game out of reach. Further, the Rovers secured a 3-0 victory over London.

The men’s club hit the field at 5 pm against BVB IA Waterloo. It only took four minutes to open the scoring off a Justin Earle tally. Ethan Beckford doubled the lead at the 15-minute mark before the Rovers conceded a goal late in the first half.

BVB IA Waterloo forward Jonny Monney tied things up 2-2 at the 75-minute mark. While a draw appeared imminent, Rovers forward Shawn-Claud Lawson delivered clutch heroics off a diving header in the 90th minute. Furthermore, the Rovers secured a 3-2 victory and 3 points over Waterloo.

Baycats suffer first defeats of 2022 season

The Barrie Baycats came up short this weekend, following a 4-0 start to open the 2022 Intercounty Baseball League season.

The Baycats welcomed the London Majors to Vintage Throne Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Ultimately, the Baycats allowed 12 runs while suppressed to just two of their own. Baycats pitcher Juan Benitez gave up seven runs in the fourth inning before being relieved.

Despite the outcome, the Baycats received a strong performance from Brandon Hillier. In addition, Hillier picked up three hits and a run as the team’s lone bright spot.

The Baycats returned to action Sunday afternoon, travelling to Bernie Arbour Memorial Stadium to face the Hamilton Cardinals.

An RBI single by Marcel Lacasse early in the contest scored Royce Ando. The Baycats held the momentum and a 2-1 lead through seven innings before the Cardinals’ bats pulled through. Moreover, the Cardinals would score thrice and take a 4-2 lead, eventually sealing the game for the Cardinals.

Through six games this season, the Baycats boast a 4-2 record and sit in third place in the 2022 IBL standings. Further, the Baycats sit 1.5 games back of Welland Jackfish (5-0) for divisional supremacy. The Baycats resume activity on Wednesday as the team travels to Domenico Field to face the Toronto Maple Leafs. The game begins at 7:30 pm.
