Simcoe County Rovers FC picks up two key victories

Simcoe County’s finest continue to dazzle on the pitch!

The Rovers enjoyed a successful weekend of activity. Firstly, the undefeated women’s club took to the pitch on Saturday at J.C. Massie Field. The Rovers continued their winning ways by defeating North Toronto Nitros 2-1, improving to 4-0 during their inaugural season.

Additionally, the Rovers received goals from Jessica Shears, who played the full 90 minutes, and Madelaine Hill, who scored her first of the season. Further, goalkeeper Yazmeen Jamieson remained a calming presence in the net, conceding a lone goal to Nitros midfielder Olivia Smith.

On the men’s side, the team rebounded emphatically against Darby FC after suffering the first loss in franchise history just a week prior.

The Rovers struck early and often, scoring three times within 32 minutes of the first half. Moreover, goals by Shawn Claud-Lawson and Ethan Beckford proved decisive while a Darby own goal resulted in the final tally. Consequently, the team would cruise to victory 3-0, improving to 2-1-1 on the season.

Up next, the Rovers travel to Markham to take on Unionville Milliken FC.

The men’s squad plays on Wednesday, May 18, at 8 pm whereas the women’s club matches up on Sunday, May 22, at 7 pm.

Barrie Baycats raise money for Barrie Food Bank

The Baycats wrapped up their exhibition contest against the Thornhill Reds over the weekend, in support of the Barrie Food Bank.

The Reds are a formidable ball club and a senior men’s team in the Greater Toronto Baseball League (GTBL). Further, the game was an opportunity for fans to get an early glimpse of the new Baycats roster while supporting a local cause. Attendees were asked to bring a non-perishable food item or donate $2 to the Barrie Food Bank.

Baycats President Josh Matlow was grateful for everyone’s contributions and support.

“I just wanted to say a big thank you to the Barrie Food Bank and the Thornhill Reds for coming out to join us on Saturday for our exhibition game to raise funds, food, and awareness for the families in need in Simcoe County,” said Matlow.

Moreover, Matlow and the Baycats look forward to their season opener later this week.

“A special thanks to all the fans who came out to support the cause and the Baycats! We look forward to seeing everyone this Thursday at 7:30 pm for our home opener,” Matlow shared enthusiastically.

Overall, the event produced a great attendance while filling many bins to be donated.

Barrie Bombers lacrosse results

The Bombers Jr. C lacrosse club kept busy with two games over the weekend.

Firstly, the Bombers welcomed the Brantford Warriors to Peggy Hill Team Community Centre. The Bombers came up on Saturday night short despite a valiant effort, losing 8-5 on home turf.

Afterward, the Bombers travelled to Iroquois Lacrosse Arena in Hagersville, ON. Scoring was on full display throughout the Sunday afternoon match. Ultimately, the Bombers suffered defeat once again, dropping a close game by a score of 10-9.

The Bombers don’t play again until Saturday evening against the Orangeville Northman. The road match will take place at Tony Rose Memorial Sports Centre. Additionally, the team’s next home game is slated for Saturday, May 28, against the Wilmot Wild.
