Simcoe athletes conclude play at 2022 Paralympic Games

Midland native Adam Dixon takes home new hardware at the Winter Games in Beijing.

That’s a wrap, Paralympic fans! The 2022 Paralympic Winter Games in Beijing concluded this weekend. Defender Adam Dixon won a silver medal in the Para Ice Hockey team competition. Team Canada’s aspirations for its first gold medal in Paralympic hockey since the 2006 games in Turin fell short, as the Canadians lost to Team USA 5-0 in the finals.

Dixon, 32, becomes a three-time medalist on the Paralympic stage. Dixon previously won a silver medal in hockey at the 2018 Games in PyeongChang and bronze at the 2014 Games in Sochi.

Additionally, Dixon is a three-time World Champion gold medalist (2008, 2013, 2017) and a Georgian College alumnus.

    Canada, meet your medallists 🇨🇦

Barrie Colts pick up two key wins over the weekend

Colts Country celebrated the weekend with consecutive victories over the Niagara IceDogs and Mississauga Steelheads.

The Colts doubled the IceDogs 6-3 on Friday at Meridian Centre. Ethan Cardwell opened the scoring 1:10 into the game and tallied two helpers for a three-point outing. Further, goaltender Matteo Lalama stopped 24 of 27 shots for his seventh win of the season.

Next, the Colts returned home to Sadlon Arena on Saturday to host the Steelheads. Cardwell continued his dominant weekend with a four-point outburst, tallying his 14th goal while collecting three apples. In addition, Mack Guzda was a brick wall in the crease, making 39 saves on 41 shots.

Looking forward, the Colts rematch the Steelheads on Tuesday night at Paramount Fine Foods Centre, followed by a Thursday evening home game against (once again) the IceDogs.

Georgian Grizzlies men’s basketball and volleyball seasons come to a close

Georgian College suffered two season-ending defeats over the weekend.

The Grizzlies travelled to Humber College for an OCAA quarterfinal basketball match against the Hawks, dropping the contest 97-80. Andy Sinclair and Jervon Davis scored 15 points apiece, but it wasn’t enough. The team’s scoring dried up in the fourth quarter, mustering a measly nine points to Humber’s 23.

Finally, the men’s volleyball squad was blanked 3-0 at home by the Sheridan Bruins. The Grizzlies ranked second in the OCAA East before succumbing to the third overall Bruins in the West. Furthermore, Cameron Chadwick led the team with 10 points.

That ends athletic play for your 2021-22 Georgian Grizzlies. Congrats to the Grizzlies on an exciting campaign!
