Barrie Paralympic snowboarder takes home gold in Norway

Homegrown talent Alex Massie struck gold in Norway, winning in men’s snowboarding at the World Para Snow Sports Championships. Massie and fellow Canadian Tyler Turner worked in tandem as the riders swept the team events. Additionally, this is the first world title for Massie, having competed in three previous World Championships and winning one bronze medal.

And Canada 🇨🇦 celebrates again!! Another world title – now in the men's team event!

The fourth time was the charm! Lillehammer 2022 culminated with a lifetime achievement for Massie, who could hardly contain his excitement.

“Incredible,” Massie said on winning gold. Further, he explained he’d “been chasing this one for eight years. So good to finally sing my national anthem.”

Importantly, Massie’s impairment happened during a wakeboarding accident in 2011 at age 16. The altercation resulted in his left leg being amputated below the knee. While he grew up practicing snowboarding, hockey was Massie’s primary sport.

To date, this is Massie’s most successful showing at a World Championship.

Canadian 🇨🇦🏂🏻 riders proved their team bonds are golden 💫 as they swept the top awards in the snowboard cross team event on the closing day of the #ParaSnowboard competition at #Lillehammer2021!#ParaSnowSports @CDNParalympics @Paralympics @CanadaSnowboard

Barrie Colts win on Saturday, have Sunday game postponed

The Colts needed more than 60 minutes at Sadlon Arena but came up clutch in overtime, defeating the North Bay Battalion 3-2. Furthermore, Ethan Cardwell provided the heroics for Barrie, deflecting a Brandt Clarke point shot past Battalion goaltender Joe Vrbetic for the game-winning tally.

What’s more, Colts’ backstop Mack Guzda continued his winning ways. Guzda made 34 saves, earning his ninth win since joining the Colts via trade in November. Head coach and GM Marty Williamson acquired Guzda from the Owen Sound Attack for a 2022 5th round pick & 2023 3rd round draft pick.

Beau Jelsma and Declan McDonnell scored the other Colts goals. Moreover, the trio has been playing spectacular hockey of late. The two, along with Cardwell, have combined for 22 points during a four-game stretch.

Sunday’s contest with the Hamilton Bulldogs was postponed due to a “non-Covid related illness.” There is currently no further information regarding the matter. The game between the Colts and Bulldogs is expected to be rescheduled later in the season.

The Colts are 2-0-1 vs. the Bulldogs during the 2021-22 OHL season.
