The Rovers (4-2-2) retain a top-5 seeding despite the loss. The Men’s Premier division remains a tightly contested race, with the Rovers sitting just three points back of Vaughan Azzurri (5-0-2). On the horizon, the men’s club continues its homestand next Saturday, June 11, against FC London.
Baycats end recent skid with big win over Jackfish
The Barrie Baycats (5-4) played back-to-back weekend games against the high-ranked Welland Jackfish (7-2). On Saturday, June 4, the Baycats travelled to Welland Stadium for the first of two matchups. Welland’s offence proved too much on this night, as the Jackfish came away with a 6-2 win.
Moreover, the Baycats were limited to just four hits while pitcher Juan Benitez allowed six.
The Cats returned home to Vintage Throne Stadium on Sunday, June 5, for a rematch with the Jackfish. Furthermore, a high-scoring affair took place. The bats were on full display as the game reached extra innings. It took 11 innings before Ryan Rijo stepped to the plate with the bases loaded. Rijo cracked a line drive past second base to score the decisive tally, winning 8-7.
Notably, the crucial victory ends a four-game skid for the Baycats. The team will resume action on Thursday, June 9, at Vintage Throne Stadium against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Further, the Baycats are 1-1 against the Maple Leafs during the 2022 IBL season.
