Georgian Grizzlies Men’s Rugby Team Play Gold Medal Game
The Grizzlies compete for gold vs. the St. Lawrence Surge Saturday, Nov. 13, at the St. Lawrence Kingston campus – North Field. They qualified after vanquishing the Durham Lords on Nov. 6 at J.C. Massie Field in Barrie, 24-22. By the same token, the Surge defeated the Humber Hawks 17-15 to advance.
In their previous bout, the Grizzlies and Surge battled to a deadlocked score of 12-12 on Oct. 3. The two teams have an opportunity to get the last laugh and close the season as champions. As a result, and with bragging rights on the line, fans should expect a competitive match-up between the region’s top schools.
The squad possess a star-studded lineup, culminated by the third-year student and second-row Jed Bricknell being named co-winner of the OCAA men’s rugby player of the year award. In like manner, Bricknell shares the award with Travis Zelinski from the opposing Surge. Additionally, three of Bricknell’s teammates were named OCAA all-stars; Daniel Martyn, Donovan Jacko, and James Robb-Kennedy. Robb-Kennedy was also named OCAA’s men’s rugby rookie of the year.
Barrie Colts Play Back-to-Back Weekend Games
The Colts kick off the weekend with a Friday evening visit to the Meridian Centre, taking on the Niagara IceDogs at 7 PM. In fact, Barrie’s OHL team (6-5-1) aim to get retribution over the IceDogs (4-8-0) after consecutive losses to the IceDogs early in the season. After that, they are back at Sadlon Arena for a Sunday evening contest vs. the Peterborough Petes (4-7-1) at 7:30 PM. Moreover, the club is on a two-game win streak heading into the weekend.
In addition, tickets to the Colts/Petes game were donated to the Barrie Sharks organization by Sadlon Motors. Subsequently, the Barrie Women’s Hockey Association (BWHA) auctioned off the tickets to send the proceeds to the Canadian Cancer Society. Georgian Grizzlies Volleyball Season Kicks Off
Looking at the college circuit, the Georgian Grizzlies men’s and women’s volleyball teams begin their seasons this weekend. Presently, the Grizzlies men’s club opens the season with a visiting match vs. the Loyalist Lancers at Niagara College, Friday at 6 PM, followed by a Saturday evening contest against the Niagara Knights at 6 PM.
Furthermore, the women’s volleyball team opens their season vs. the Niagara Knights on Friday, Nov. 12 at 6 PM, followed by a Saturday night game against the Loyalist Lancers, 6 PM at Niagara College.
