The Week That Was in Barrie Oct. 5th

Of course we all enjoyed an extra day off work and school this past week, thanks to…Thanksgiving. It’s great to see so many Barrie-ites show their gratitude at this time of year, despite everything we’ve been through in 2020.

Speaking of gratitude, how about this fantastic initiative from @quesadabayfield supporting the local arts scene!

And how can you not be thankful for scenes like this along our cityscape…

4 Reasons To Be Thankful In Barrie Right Now

5 Reasons To Be Thankful In Barrie Right Now

GIVE THANKS THIS WEEKEND FOR THESE 4 THINGS IN BARRIE

Barrie has a bit of a reputation as a city that likes to complain (occasionally)

And yet, when you take stock of all the good things out there that are often overlooked or taken for granted, it paints a vibrant picture. Despite the pandemic.

In honour of Thanksgiving, dive into our meandering list of things to give thanks for in Barrie right now.

4 Reasons To Be Thankful In Barrie Right Now

SELF CARE

Now, having said all of that, we might might need some maintenance on their nerves by the end of the year.

Luckily Barrie is packed with a growing number of options for self care and general health improvement.

Keep in mind that of course, there are plenty of restrictions due to Covid in place. So be sure to check the requirements before heading out.

If it’s the body you’d like to work on, hit up Jeevanaya Wellness or one of the many other yoga spots across the city. Or a gym.

And if the diet is dogging you, visit a few of the healthy eating restaurants in town. And don’t forget about Nutrition Plus downtown for organic bulk foods, herbs and spices, free range and organic meats, and gluten free foods.

THE WATERFRONT

It’s a no-brainer. And we tend to overlook what’s in our own backyard.

Yet we are fortunate to live in a city with a waterfront that produces daily breathtaking views and walking spaces. And at this time of the year, the fall colours just make it all the more inviting.

BACKYARD NATURE

And speaking of our own backyards, the Ardagh Bluffs, Sunnidale Park, Heritage trail and Wilkin’s Walk are just a few options to get the most out of in-town nature.

There simply are not many cities in Canada that can make similar claims. Get out there and revel in it.

LIVE MUSIC

C’mon, you KNOW we are going to use every opportunity to brag up the local music scene.

Barrie is fortunate to have a terrific assortment of venues that offer live music throughout the week including Flying Monkey’s, Common Good cafe, Donaleigh’s and North Country.

Love Your Lunch: Liven Up The Noon Hour Break Part 2

The majority of us have almost exactly the same lunch EVERY DAY. In fact, more than a third of office workers in North America (pre-Covid) have eaten a variation of the the same midday repast… for the last nine months.

But how can we break out of our lunchtime auto pilot and indulge in something that will taste good and we’ll actually remember eating?

Barrie has a full menu of midday destinations that will inspire as well satisfy.

This week we’ll offer up a couple of cool destinations to put the zip back in your ziplock.

Liven Up Lunch – Skewers

Skewers

There is no such thing as too much barbecue. Particularly when said barbecue is an exotic selection bringing the sumptuous tastes of a far away land to your own backyard.

Skewers on Clapperton offers up lunch in a Grilled Korean style. Drizzled in thick, sticky sauces, the eponymous skewer is a popular south Korean street food comprised of chicken and scallions grilled on a stick.

The Bulgogi sandwich, dripping in saucy sweetness

This is an ideal lunch locale because it’s tasty, it’s quick and it’s affordable.

The cozy eatery has a ton of variations on the addictive cuisine (be sure to try the Pulled Pork sandwich on one of your trips) as well as lunch specials for under $10.

It’s a cool joint that easily falls into workplace lore as a lunch place you HAVE to try. One of those unique places that newbies have to make a pilgrimage to before they are really accepted by the office crew. And when they do, they nod in understanding…”now I get why this place gets so many @ mentions”

And if you really want to wow your team, consider bringing everyone in the office to lunch here! Skewers offers catering.

Skewers is open Monday – Saturday 11:00am – 9pm. Find them on Insta and tag them when you dive into one of their dishes!

TGIF: Get Bombed…Responsibly.

Flying Monkeys IPA packs a delicious punch

Let’s be honest…there are worse ways to kickstart the weekend than with a cold beverage.

And yet, it’s easy to fall into a routine of buying the same couple of beers or spirits at your favorite watering hole or the LCBO. Of course, there’s always going to be your standard go-to’s. But mixing it up (get it…mixing???) makes for a fun outing.

With that in mind, we’re taking a shot (bet you thought we would stop with the drinking puns after that first one) at finding you a weekly selection of spirits to liven up your Friday.

This week why don’t you try…

SMASH BOMB ATOMIC

The primary objective of any good beer is to present it’s drinker with a memorable sitting that combines taste and experience.

And this IPA from Flying Monkey’s accomplishes that mission in spades.

The initial pour is gentle and inviting, with an amber reddish hue that leaves about half an inch of thick creamy foam head.

Even though the name might suggest otherwise, this is actually a lighter tasting pale ale. The aroma hints at touches of grass spread across citrusy and bitter tones. The overall strength isn’t at all detracted by the lighter vibe, as the hops linger pleasantly among the tastebuds.

Ideal to pair with pub fare, but in particular we’d recommend a Fish n’ chips dish. The Abv is 6.0 so you can stick with it for the entire evening if you pace yourself. And the ridiculously imaginative can design is worthy of a shelf display if you are a collector.

Find out more about the beer from Flying Monkeys right here.

Liven Up Lunch – Tandoori Kingdom

If we eat together, we achieve more. A study run by Cornell University showed that co-workers who shared a meal, worked better together in the workplace. And shared their fries, which is clearly vital for co-operation at the office.

And nothing inspires great conversation like great food. Tandoori Kingdom provides the setting, and the nosh to achieve both.

Power Lunches, Trendy Food

Indian cuisine dates back over 5000 years. Each region has its own traditions, religions and culture that influence its food, which is why it’s such a trendy and cool meal.

There’s always one or two occasions a month when you need to add some zip to your work lunch routine. Maybe it’s a power lunch, or a client meeting, or a team outing. Tandoori Kingdom’s menu is fantastic way to energize the midday hour. Packed with authentic Indian cuisine, your lunch will have a built in conversation starters. Not to say that a burger or a sub is lacking in imagination, but consider how much easier it is to break the ice with a potential client or a teammate when the offerings are as unique and intriguing as the menu here.

Sitting down to a flavorful spread like that offered at Tandoori Kingdom is the perfect spark for creativity. Kicking around ideas while sampling their delectable range of chicken curry or vegetable dishes is a far more engaging invitation than brainstorming in the coffee room over a bag of vending machine chips.

And as if you need any more incentive, they are open on Thanksgiving! Mention Barrie Uncovered when you order and get free delivery if you prefer to have their fine dining brought to you this long weekend.

Book your next power lunch at Tandoori Kingdom! And enjoy an impressive meal to impress your guest.
